MSC – Marine Stewardship Council
The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) fisheries and MSC Chain of Custody (CoC) standards help companies and organisations to promote and identify wild caught fish as sustainable and well managed. Control Union UK is accredited by ASI (Assurance Services International) for the MSC Fisheries and MSC CoC programmes.

Marine Stewardship Council
About the standard
The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is an international non-profit organisation. MSC Certification contributes to the health of the world’s oceans by recognising and rewarding sustainable fishing practices, influencing the choices people make when buying seafood and working to transform the seafood market to a sustainable basis.
The MSC certification process covers fish caught from ‘vessel to plate’ and across the whole supply chain.
The MSC’s principles and criteria for sustainable fishing were developed in 1999 as a method for promoting sustainable fisheries. The MSC standard applies to wild-capture fisheries only – whatever their size, type or location.
Three main principles
The MSC’s Standard for determining environmentally sustainable, well-managed fisheries centres around three main principles: The condition of the fish stocks; The impacts of the fishery on the surrounding ecosystem; The effectiveness and performance of the fishery management system (in biological, environmental, socio-economic, commercial and legal contexts).

MSC Fisheries
MSC certification helps you to meet a growing demand for sustainable seafood, strengthens your reputation and offers new business opportunities. 5 reasons to choose MSC:
-
Global demand for sustainable seafood is growing
-
Create confidence in your products by offering independently verified sustainable seafood that protects our ocean for the future
-
Strengthen staff, supplier and customer loyalty by working on common sustainability goals
-
Demonstrate that your business is well-managed
-
Choose from more than 100 species of wild-caught seafood from thousands of certified suppliers
MSC Chain of Custody
For fish processors, traders and retailers the purchase of MSC product ensures a future for their livelihood and the industry as a whole. Eco-labelling often ensures that a product sells at a better price than its counterparts and is attractive to an ever-increasing market. Customers can be assured that any product carrying the MSC logo can be traced throughout the supply chain to an MSC certified fishery. Because of this, Chain of Custody certification is a requirement at each step in the supply chain.
