Why the RSPO certification is important

Palm oil is among the world’s most consumed food ingredients and is utilised in about half of all packaged food products.

In 2008, the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) developed a set of environmental and social criteria which companies must comply with in order to produce certified sustainable palm oil (CSPO). When properly applied, these criteria can help to minimise negative impacts such as deforestation.

Through their fruits, oil palms are highly efficient and produce oil year-round. It is the highest-yielding vegetable oil crop, needing less than half the land required by other oil-producing crops to generate the same amount of oil. One hectare planted with oil palms can yield an average of up to six tons of oil per year, helping to make palm oil the least expensive vegetable oil in the world.

    How you benefit

The benefits of obtaining certification by Control Union

The principal objective of the RSPO is to promote the growth and use of sustainable palm oil through cooperation within the supply chain and to open a dialogue among its stakeholders.

Growers are evaluated for a five-year certification, and, if certified, are annually assessed to ensure constant compliance.

RSPO certification can assist in the better utilisation of resources and systematic management practices which can lead to increased profits, improved planning and less post-proces verification.

Control Union is an international inspection and certification body, accredited for the execution of audits and certifications and is authorised to conduct RSPO audits.
