Control Union UK are proud to announce our recent accreditation for the ASC-MSC Seaweed Standard.
Seaweed operations can influence water movement, the physical structure of terrestrial and aquatic habitats and water quality, as well as the productivity of fisheries. Globally, seaweed production and harvesting are increasing, leading to the demand for oversight and certification.
The ASC-MSC standard rewards sustainable seaweed production and provides a benchmark for improvement. By auditing against this standard, Control Union can now support certified companies to demonstrate that they are actively minimising their impact on the surrounding natural environment, as well as operating in a socially responsible manner whereby they are caring for their employees, working with the local community and acting as conscientious neighbours.
Certification is offered globally through Control Union’s extensive network of offices, and covers both the Farm/Harvest operation and the chain of custody. Certified operations can apply to use the ASC-MSC Seaweed logo and make the claim that their products are the result of either “Responsible Aquaculture Farming” and/or “Certified Sustainable Seafood”.
Dr. Toru Tsuzaki, Principal Certifications Manager for the Control Union UK Fisheries and Aquaculture team states:
“We are delighted to add this Seaweed Standard to our repertoire of certifications for the marine environment. Seaweed has an important role to play in both the health of our seas and in providing a sustainable source of nutrition to the human population, and this scheme provides vital oversight of seaweed farming and wild harvesting operations.”
